A Princess Party Without Paying a King's Ransom by Kymberlyn Steel-Fannin

Princess parties are extremely popular and more importantly timeless. But with today's standards being nothing short of extravagant, it's hard not to get carried away. If you're like me, you want to give your daughter the royal treatment while keeping the kingdom intact. Here are ten tips on how you can create a Princess Birthday Party Without Paying a King's Ransom.

1. Focus on the theme and allow it to dictate the experience. As your guests arrive you might want to play reception music in the background. Allow a younger sibling to shower each guest with silk rose petals and then escort them to the "grand ballroom".

2. Make your own invitations. You can purchase card stock at any office supply or craft store. Let the invitation set the tone of the party. For example,

" Her Royal Highness, Princess Isabella, requests your company at her 6th Annual Bubbles and Ballyhoo Birthday Ball."

Also, search the internet. There are plenty of free clipart resources you can use to make one-of-a-kind invitations. A little confetti and glitter added into the envelop makes for an extra special touch.

3. Dress up as a fairy godmother and read the Tale of the Frog Prince. When you are finished tell your guests you have a frog for them to kiss. Have your guests close their eyes and present each with a hard boiled egg which has been peeled. Tell them to kiss their prince charming. This will of course create a round of giggles and squeals . Now let them open their eyes. That wasn't so bad, was it?

4. My grandmother was fond of making a dessert she called her "Queen of Heart's Tart." It is a simple yet delectable dessert perfect to serve at a summertime party. A miniature pie crust is baked according to the package directions. Once cooled, fill the shell with sliced strawberries. Take several strawberries and slice them into quarters. arrange the pieces along the outer edge of the shell standing lengthwise much like spikes of a crown. You may choose to lightly drizzle honey over the berries, or a simple glaze. Top with cool whip and two sliced strawberries arranged to represent a heart. This is an easy dessert, and giving each guest their own tart will certainly make them feel special.

5. Princess pizzas are a fun way to keep your guests engaged. Allow each of your party goers to make their own pizza. Using English muffins, set up a pizza making station and allow the guests to add their own toppings. Bake the muffins at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes until the cheese has melted .

6. Allow your guests to create their own princess slippers. This will take some extra planning on your part. You will need to know shoe sizes when your guests RSVP. Simple inexpensive canvas shoes can be purchased at a variety of discount stores. Often you can buy a pair for $2.00 or less. The shoes can be decorated using fabric markers, buttons, sequins, silk flowers and fast drying fabric glue. When the guests are done decorating have them set their shoes aside to dry. While they are engaged in another activity, fill the shoes with party favors or treats. If you don't want to be bothered with shoe sizes, you can just as easily decorate t-shirts.

7. Reinvent old favorites- Rather than passing a hot potato simply rename the game to fit your theme -"Pass the Glass Slipper" or "Musical Thrones".

8. Plan ahead-shop around - You can find party favors at discount stores, dollar stores, goodwill and the internet. Goodwill you ask? Yes, Goodwill. A member of royalty is never without her jewels. Second hand stores often have a wonderful costume jewelry selection and the pieces can be very inexpensive.

9. Throw a Bubble Ball. Bubble makers are fairly common and very inexpensive. If you are having a springtime or summertime party, consider moving the festivities outside for a Bubble Ball. Set up an area under a canopy where the princess and her court can dance, chase bubbles and just have fun! If its wintertime you can accomplish the same sense of fun with balloons. You can find helium tanks at Wal-Mart or any party supply store for that matter. The size of your room and the number of quests will determine the number of balloons you blow up. Attach ribbons to each of the balloons so that when the ball is over, guests can each take home their own balloon bouquet, consisting of 3-5 balloons. Make sure you leave a few air filled balloons on the floor. Kids love to throw them around.

10. If you're looking to go the extra mile, consider creating a costume trunk. This is another time when your local Goodwill and Salvation Army becomes a goldmine. Look for flower girl dresses, party dresses and dance and Halloween costumes. If your willing to spend the time and do a little driving you will probably find a good selection of dress-up clothes at garage sales as well. Let your guests pick an outfit to wear to the ball.

A successful party is one that considers time, budget, age appropriateness an implements creativity. A prince or two at the party? Don't fret, just be flexible. Boys can easily be a prince or a pirate. Don't be afraid to experiment and use your imagination. Call upon your inner fairy Godmother, and with a little forethought you can create a birthday party that is the talk of the town while leaving the crown jewels safely in the bank!
