The Stick Horse - An Old-Fashioned Toy That Lives On by Susanne Myers
Do you remember playing with a stick horse when you were a child? I remember spending hours riding around the house and taking care of my little horse. It doesn't matter if you have a little girl who keeps asking for a pony for Christmas, or a little boy who likes nothing better than pretending to be a cowboy. A stick horse is an old-fashioned toy that still belongs into every child's toy box.
We live in an age of over-realistic toys with almost life size ponies that move and make sounds and baby dolls that eat, drink and pee. Our kids are glued in front of the television or the latest and greatest game console for hours on end. The problem is that none of these modern toys stimulate your child's imagination.
So, how can a simple little toy like a stick horse fix this problem? It takes a good bit of imagination to turn a stick with something that vaguely resembles the head of a horse into a living pony in your child's mind. Since this stick horse also doesn't actually do anything, your child will have to use his or her imagination to make it behave like a horse. In his mind your child can make the horse walk or gallop, eat hay and of course race through the fields.
Your child will make up the horse's character, find it a name and determine what the horse likes to eat and how fast it can run. Since the stick horse is essentially a blank slate, your child can imagine just about anything. And best of all, your child can ride the stick horse around, making it as fast or slow as he or she likes.
With kids spending hours each day on the couch instead of running around, and child obesity being at an all time high, any toy that will make your child run around is a good one. A stick horse is perfect for getting your child to exercise without even realizing it. For an extra little workout, stage a horse race through the living room or even better in the back yard.
